Selecting the Right Program in Brazil

In Brazil, there are many different universities or educational institutions and study programs to choose from, and finding the best fit or the best course will prove important in determining your study abroad experience.

There are a numerous opportunities, programs, geographical locations and high quality of education; it may be a challenge to select the right program for students and that’s where can help with advice and guide to study in Brazil.

Abide by the following steps:

Goals and Objectives

Everyone prefers to study abroad in Brazil for some or the other reason, though they are different. Some people want to learn Portuguese, while others wish to go for an independent research activity; some students wish to pursue a degree program in Brazil, and so on. So, know your goals and objectives first and then move on to the next level. 


Research about the institution, coursework, degree program, duration and other things can help in knowing your goal more clearly. Ask yourself whether the course/program would be apt and in accordance with your objective and goals.  

Follow this list of questions when searching for a study abroad program in Brazil:
  • Courses/Programmes Available: Which program can be taken  as per their credentials?
  • Accommodation: Is accommodation inclusive in  the course offered by the University, if not, what are the other alternatives of housing in Brazil for International Students. 
  • Costs: What are the accommodation and living costs, tuition fees for different study levels?
  • Duration: What is the duration of the course/program in Brazil? Is it short-term or long-term?
  • Location: Where is the University located? Are all the resources available?
  • Language: What are the options for language of instruction in Brazil? Are courses offered in Portuguese or English or any other language?
  • Support: Are there any support services provided in Brazil?

Shortlist and Enquire

Once you have completed your research, jot down the Universities you feel are suitable for you. Contact those Universities and ask all your queries (if any). The contact details are stated on each university’s official website. Visit the official website of the Universities short-listed in Brazil, and get more details about the qualifications, admission requirements, scholarships, and other information. 


Once you have decided the course and university you want to go for, start applying, without further delay. Apply to the accredited University and Colleges in Brazil. Visit their respective website and know about their accreditation. 

Admission Requirements and Procedure

For Undergraduate Programs 

Students must have completed secondary education in order to gain admittance to an undergraduate program i.e, they must hold a Certificate of Secondary Education. Along with the secondary education certificate, they should have the results of either Vestibular or ENEM examination.

For Postgraduate Programs

Postgraduate studies encompass Master’s and Doctorate/PhD programs.

For the Master Programs

A student who has finished 3 years of undergraduate university education is eligible to apply for Master’s degree program in Brazil. If you want to go for PhD later, then choose a Master’s degree that is considered as "strictu sensu”. A “Lato sensu” degree denotes a specialization in professional areas such as medicine or law. 

For Doctorate/ PhD Programs

For admission to a Doctorate/PhD program, students are required to have a 'strictu sensu' Master Degree.

For Post-Doctorate Programs

A candidate is eligible to apply for a post-doctorate program, if he/she has completed a doctorate program. Your profile should include the research, training and specialized course details.

Entrance Examination

The prospective students are required to sit an entrance exam in order to gain admittance to both a public and private universities in Brazil. Before registering, you’re required to select the university and course or degree program you wish to pursue, as each university has its own examination. Depending upon the higher education institution, you are required to appear for either the 'Vestibular' exam or 'ENEM' exam, or both. 

For Undergraduate Studies

Vestibular:  Students need to sit an entrance examination called the Vestibular to gain admittance to the universities in Brazil. The minimum grade to be attained in Portuguese and another subject is 3 each, and a score greater than 1 is required in all the remaining subjects.

High School National Exam or ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Medio): This exam is used by some of the Universities in place of Vestibular for admissions. 

For Post-Graduate Studies

You are required to take entrance examinations for admissions to post-graduate studies. These entrance exams are subject specific and are designed by the individual institutions. 

Proficiency in Portuguese

Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners or CELPE-Bras (Certificado de Proficiencia em Lingua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros): All the international students applying to study in Brazil are required to demonstrate their Portuguese language proficiency by taking an examination known as CELPE-Bras. The CELPE-Bras is offered in Brazil and many other countries with the help of the Brazilian Ministry of International Relations (MRE). 

Proficiency in English Language

TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language- It tests the proficiency in English language in academic settings.

IELTS: International English Language Testing System- It tests the proficiency in English language of non-native speakers.

Scholarships and Student Visa

Brazil offers scholarships to bright and suitable students, check if you’re eligible for scholarships. If yes, apply for scholarships. Once you have been accepted by the university, apply for Brazilian student visa
