Structure of Education in Brazil

Fundamental Education

School education encompasses primary and secondary education. Primary education lasts for 9 years, is compulsory and leads to the Certificate of completion of elementary/primary education (Certificado de Conclusao de Ensino Fundamental). Secondary education lasts for 3 years. Students also have the option of taking up a course/programme in a range of technical and vocational fields, which lasts for 3-5 years. Such courses lead to the qualification of Assistant Technician, Technician, or second level Technician. 

Higher Education-
Higher education is overseen and is provided by the federal government, state government, and municipalities. Brazil possesses public and private universities, colleges, higher education institutes and technological centres. Higher education is organized at two levels:
  • Undergraduate studies which last for 4 to 6 years, and
  • Postgraduate studies that last for 2 to 6 years. 

Pre-Higher Education

Duration of Compulsory Education:
  • Age of Entry: 6
  • Age of Exit: 14

Basic Education

Basic education comprises of pre-school education, primary and secondary education.

Pre-School/Pre-Primary Education

  • School Type: Day-care centres, kindergarten, and pre-schools
  • Age Group: Up to 5 years old

Primary Education (Ensino Fundamental)

  • Levels: Ensino Fundamental I (years 1-5) and Ensino Fundamental II (years 6-9)
  • Duration: 9 years
  • Age Group: 6 years to 14 years old
  • Grades: 1 to 9
  • Certificate Awarded: Completion Certificate of Primary Education (Certificado de Conclusao de Ensino Fundamental)

Secondary Education (Ensino Medio)

  • Duration: 3
  • Age Group: 15 years to 17 years old
  • Certificate Awarded: Certificate of Secondary Education (Certificado de Ensino Medio)

Vocational Secondary Education

  • School Type: Professional education
  • Duration: 3 to 4 years
  • Certificate/Diploma Awarded: Technician Level Medium or High School Diploma with specialization in (your chosen field)

Higher Education (Educacao Superior)

  • Age: 18 years and above
Secondary education is mandatory for those wishing to pursue higher education. Also, students are required to pass an entrance examination for their specific course of study.
